Vulnerability in Interpreting: how Being Vulnerable Creates Amazing Interpreters

Workshop Description:

The workshop is heavily based on the work of Brene Brown, a shame and vulnerability researcher, speaker, and bestselling author.  Her work analyzes what shame is and how to combat shame.  Learning to combat shame lessens its interference in our lives and creates space for authentic selves to shine. Using what we know about language acquisition, scaffolding, and your zone of proximal development - we see that vulnerability and openness are the only way we can improve our profession.  We must start with where people are and create a safe space for honest assessments, the ability to fail and succeed without judgment, and the knowledge that skills are acquired and evolve over time.  There are times when growth, which is allowed to bloom in a safe space, happens in massive leaps, sometimes in small steps - but always moving forward.

Presenter Bio:

Shannon Townsend is a self development and vulnerability junky. She has spent the last several years honing her skills as a workshop facilitator, focusing on what drives interpreters

into scary dark places. Holding her Bachelors of Communication: Community Interpreting, Authorization: Educational Interpreter, and eagerly awaiting the results of her NIC. Communication styles and the workings of the interpreter mind are what drive her to hold workshops that force participants to be open, honest, and vulnerable “It’s the only way we ever truly learn anything being vulnerable and present.”
