
Mala Poe has an Education Specialist degree (Ed.S.) in Deaf Education: Applied Linguistics as well as a Masters degree in Linguistics, both from Gallaudet University. She has been a member of the deaf community since 1986, and holds national certification in interpreting. By day she is a staff interpreter for the University of California at San Diego for Deaf professors and by night, she teaches Interpreting at Mesa Community College. In between, she works as a freelance interpreter, consultant, and presenter on issues of ASL linguistics, and working with individuals who are Deaf-Blind. On the state level, she is RID’s Vice-Chair for the Deaf-Blind Member Section, a rater for the California Subject Examinations for Teachers in the area of ASL and locally she currently serves as SDCRID’s Vice President. She also volunteers much of her time in the community. In the little free time she has, she enjoys bowling competitively and riding her motorcycle with her husband and friends.
